The Farm

Sept. 14, 2008 ~ Storm

We took a direct hit from Ike, and made it through just fine. We have not done a thorough inspection of the entire farm, but the house and barns appear to be in good shape. There are damaged and broken trees, with plenty of fallen limbs everywhere. We did lose power and phone service, but that was expected under the circumstances. Shortly before bedtime power was restored for about 30 minutes, long enough to cool the house down, and we slept well. Considering the situation throughout the state, we were extremely grateful to the repair men and women who worked in extreme conditions so that we could have power and phone service.

A neighbor's storage building was knocked off or blown off its foundation, but I expect they can set it right again with a tractor.

We are far enough inland that Ike had lost much of his strength by the time he visited us, but it was still an awesome thing to see, trees bent nearly double by the wind, rain being blown sideways. The noise was really something, too!

During the night I woke up and headed to the bathroom, where even by moonlight things did not look quite right. After a quick trip back to the bedroom for a flashlight, I discovered that there was in fact a FROG in the bathroom sink. Just a little one. Storm-related, no doubt, but we are still trying to figure out how he got in there. This morning we found several dead frogs in the back yard (presumably drowned), and a turtle, and countless fallen limbs. We consider ourselves blessed.

We worry about friends who evacuated, and all those people who chose not to evacuate, whose situation is now uncertain. We pray they are all safe.
