Dec. 14, 2004 ~ Empty places

Apparently I did mention Earl by name at least once before in this journal. It was in this entry . Be warned, it's long, and pretty sad, and it takes awhile to get to the part about Earl. But what he had to say was important... maybe you'll want to give it a read.

Today was crazy busy. Lots of doing and calling and talking, talking, talking on the phone. Woke up early, thinking about Earl. We had promised Soldier Boy, who is thinking about being a firefighter, that we would ask Earl about it. Didn't get to make that call. And had Earl ever come by to pick up those chains he wanted? We don't know, and it doesn't really matter. He came and went sometimes and we didn't always know he had been here till a few days later. He would drop things off or pick things up. Lots of borrowing going on, back and forth. One day we noticed that we had more water tubs than before, and while it seemed they had just magically appeared, Earl had dropped them off. Things magically disappeared, too, and that meant that Earl had borrowed them.

I'm rambling already.

Someone has volunteered to take his dogs, if his son doesn't want them. The fellow talked for a good while before I realized that he was only mentioning three dogs. I had to tell him that there was a fourth, a new puppy that Earl was absolutely in love with. He said that would be okay, too. It didn't seem right to split them up. And it doesn't.

Well.

I guess things happen in their own time, and for a reason, and it's all a part of some big plan. But tonight in East Texas, there are an awful lot of empty places.
