Feb. 20, 2010 ~ Brighter days

A quiet sound, off to the left, and two birds, first one and then the other, splashed gently down into the pond. Feet first, wings extended (to slow them down?), they settled quickly into the water. Katy and I were out for an early morning walk, and had not expected these visitors, but were happy to see them just the same. Not ducks, but some sort of waterfowl, they have black heads.

I am not a stellar dog mom when it's cold. Our walks are not nearly long enough to suit the fur face. As far as I'm concerned, she needs to go outside and do her business and then it's time to go back in where it's warm. As I get older, I just can't seem to take the cold. But today was warm, up to 70 degrees, and sunny, so we took several long walks, making up for lost time. The daffodils that line the driveway are just starting to bloom. In a couple of weeks they will be beautiful. There's a chance of more snow next week, but I expect the flowers will be fine.

Spoke with older son today. And younger son. Older son is busy with family, work and school, and we don't talk as often. Younger son calls frequently. Both sons and daughter-in-law seem to be doing well. Granddaughter, too. Both boys have had snow, something older son is not used to seeing. Younger son now lives where snow is commonplace.

There is talk of going out to dinner tonight. Husband mentioned barbecue, or Mexican food. Whatever it is, it will be good. I'm grateful that someone else will be doing the cooking. Thankful also for warmer, longer days ahead. The short days of winter are hard to take. The days may be the same length year round, but it's the amount of daylight that matters most.

Thanks for stopping by.
