Jan. 22, 2006 ~ Rain, blessed rain

The last time we had a reasonable amount of rain was during Hurricane Rita. "Reasonable" meaning more than half an inch. So it has been awhile, and we're all pretty sick of worrying about wildfires. Our grass is pretty much dead, not dormant, but dead, and dust flies with every step we take. When the cows come into the pen to eat it's a good idea to cover your face if you can, because the dust is bad.

But today, it rained. At least two inches, maybe more. There were things on the ground, which to the best of my recollection, are called "puddles." You have probably heard of these, and most likely have seen them recently. If you live in a certain part of Oregon (Hi, Myrna!), you've seen way too many puddles and more rain than you can stand. The nice thing about weather is that it changes. When it's too wet or too dry or too hot or too cold, for a long period of time, we get real tired of it real fast. I like variety in my days. Clouds and sun and rain and rainbows. Cool days and warm ones. Lately we've had ridiculously warm weather -- our tulip trees are in full bloom -- and it just doesn't seem right for January. Two or three cold days does not constitute winter, thank you very much.

There is a coyote who hangs around who is starting to really get on my nerves. If you love coyotes, skip this next part, okay? Husband has tried to shoot it several times but he can never get close enough to get a clear shot. He missed again today. That coyote was entirely too close to our calves. It was acting strangely, and I suspect it might be rabid. We had what appeared to be a rabid, dying possum on our back porch recently, and we do have a greater than usual rabies problem in our county now. Meadow needs her shots, and I never seem to make it to Dr. Susan's clinic in time to see her, so I may have to drop Meadow off one morning and pick her up at lunchtime. She does love going to Dr. Susan's, mostly because everyone there loves her, too.

Anyway, that's all for now. Thanks for stopping by!
