Nov. 20, 2002 ~ In less than a week

Soldier Boy will be shipping out. I am now thinking in terms of days until he leaves, and no doubt that will soon shift to hours. As soon as he's gone, though, we'll be thinking in terms of days until he returns. IF things don't go south with Iraq, he's supposed to be in Afghanistan for six months. I don't even know what to say. They are no longer training or playing at war; this is real. The other guys who shoot at them are not their fellow soldiers, and they have real bullets and real grenades. It's crazy, if you think about it. People trying to kill people they've never even met... people hating a whole group of people because of where they live.

Soldier Boy tells me that it's hard to tell the good guys from the bad... which is tough. What do you do? Trust no one, I guess.

What a way to live.
