The Farm

Apr. 11, 2006 ~ In memory

Ed never met a stranger. He was funny and witty and wise, and he had the best Moo of anyone in the world. Just ask our cows. Always up for a new adventure, always ready to go anywhere Gilda wanted to go, braving Louisiana highways (bet he never did pay that ticket!) and Texas back roads, and countries near and far. We knew we were in for a wonderful time when Gilda and Ed visited. He made everyone feel as if we were the most interesting, important people ever born, and most of us probably secretly believed that Ed loved us best of all.

The first time that he and Gilda stayed with us, there was a moment, shortly before they left, when I found myself choking up. I wondered what it would have been like, having someone like Ed for a dad. Someone who smiled often and laughed hard, and seemed to care about everybody and everything. I hoped that his children knew just how lucky they were.

He blamed me and all of Texas for George Bush. Ed insisted that if we wanted to get rid of our then-governor, we could have sent him anywhere but Washington!

There was one thing which was never in doubt Ed was enchanted by Gilda. He adored her. Those two found a beautiful love, late in life, and it was a pleasure to watch them together. They looked after each other and fussed over each others health, though these last few years it was mostly Gilda taking care of Ed. He was in pain, and not himself, and I know it wasnt always easy for Gilda. But through it all the love was strong, and Gilda was strong, and now her rock is gone. Her Eddie.

Well miss him so.
